Building the Foundations of Geometric Intelligence
At Orain Labs, research is not separate from the product — it is the foundation of the product. We are researching how machines can understand engineering intent, reason about engineering constraints, represent geometry, construct precise CAD models, and interact with complex engineering systems.
"Our research spans multiple layers of the ORAIN technology stack, each addressing a fundamental challenge in building an intelligent engineering system."
How the Research Connects
These research areas are deeply connected. Engineering reasoning determines what should be built. The Geometric Engine determines how that intent should be represented geometrically. ORAIN Forge determines how that geometric plan becomes precise geometry. VSE determines how the resulting geometry and design state are represented to the engineer.
Through PAXX 1.0, these research capabilities can ultimately be exposed to external applications and engineering systems.
Specialized Technology Research
Deep research into the specialized layers that power the ORAIN Geometric Intelligence architecture.
Engineering Reasoning Engine
A component may have thousands of geometric configurations, but only some satisfy intended engineering requirements. ERE is our research into teaching machines to reason about engineering intent and design decisions.
- Engineering intent interpretation
- Constraint reasoning & dimensional relationships
- Feature dependencies & design feasibility
- Geometric and engineering consistency
- Design validation & decision-making
Geometric Engine
Engineering geometry is a structured system of features, dimensions, constraints, relationships, and dependencies. The Geometric Engine represents and plans this structure computationally.
- Feature-based geometric representations
- Parametric design structures & feature graphs
- Design relationships & geometry planning
- Geometry-to-structure understanding
- Bridge between reasoning and deterministic construction
ORAIN Forge
Reasoning about a design is only useful if it can become precise geometry. Forge explores how structured plans translate into robust CAD geometry using computational geometry and CAD-kernel technology.
- Boundary Representation (B-Rep) geometry
- Solid and surface modeling operations
- Topological consistency & Boolean operations
- Geometry validation & feature execution
- CAD interoperability & engineering-grade generation
Visualization Sub-Engine
Engineering intelligence must ultimately be communicated back to the engineer. VSE provides inspection of generated geometry and design states without burdening reasoning or construction kernels with rendering.
- High-performance geometry visualization
- Interactive 3D representation & inspection
- Design-state & engineering data visualization
- Decoupled rendering pipelines
- Model exploration and state inspection

The System Beneath the Interface
We believe the hardest problems in engineering AI cannot be solved by simply placing a language model on top of existing CAD software. Engineering requires a unified combination of Reasoning, Geometry, Constraints, Computation, Validation, and Visualization.
We build, test, measure, and iterate. Some experiments become production technologies, some reveal limitations, and some lead to entirely new approaches.
Building in Public
We share selected parts of our research journey with the engineering and technology community:
"Can machines move from understanding what an engineer says to understanding what an engineer means?"
Answering that question requires more than a better language model. It requires systems that can reason about engineering intent, geometry, constraints, topology, and physical design relationships. That is the problem we are working to solve.
